The majority of the garbage that enters the ocean each year is plastic. Billions of pounds of plastic can be found in swirling convergences that make up about 40% of the world's ocean surfaces. Studies estimate there are now 15-51 trillion pieces of plastic in the world's oceans, from the equator to the poles, and from Arctic ice sheets to the sea floor. Not one square mile of surface ocean anywhere on Earth is free of plastic pollution.

The majority of plastic pollution in the ocean originates on land and is caused by humans. Rivers are the main source of ocean plastic pollution, but there is another major source of plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—fishing gear. Most plastic in coastal waters comes from land-based sources, but the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is different. Our research shows that about 80% of the plastic in the GPGP comes from fishing activities at sea. Buoys, eel traps, crates, nets, and oyster spacers are examples of fishing-related gear found in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of litter—primarily microplastics—in the North Pacific Ocean and is actually composed of two separate large patches, the Western Garbage Patch (found near Japan) and the Eastern Garbage Patch (found between Hawaii and California). The GPGP is estimated to be twice the size of Texas, triple the size of France or Thailand. Around 100 million kilograms of plastic float in the GPGP, which contains 1.8 trillion pieces larger than 0.5mm—about 160 pieces per person living on the planet.

To address the global plastic pollution epidemic, we need urgent action. The Center for Biological Diversity is tackling this problem on multiple fronts, including petitioning the US Environmental Protection Agency to regulate plastics as a pollutant under the Clean Water Act. We must push for plastic pollution to be treated as the hazardous waste that it is.

Noise pollution has also been observed to alter the feeding behaviour of endangered blue whales and drive them away from important feeding and breeding grounds. In some cases, intense noise from human activities has caused whales to strand themselves on beaches, leading to their death and creating indirect consequences for seafloor-dwelling animals that rely on the whale's body as a food source.
